What Leland is built from
Brunswick County, across the river from downtown, on the Brunswick River and Sturgeon Creek. A small crossroads until about 2000 and one of the fastest-growing towns in the state since, so the stock is overwhelmingly new: slab-on-grade houses in large planned communities cut out of pine flat and cypress swamp.
New arrivals in quantity — retirees, families priced out of New Hanover County, and people who work back over the bridge in Wilmington. Most rugs here were bought for the house rather than inherited into it, and most of the houses have not yet had a bad water year.
The Leland problem
The water that reaches a rug on this side of the river is not the water people picture. This is blackwater country: the creeks and swamps behind Leland drain through cypress and pine, so what comes out of them is stained the colour of strong tea and mildly acidic, loaded with tannins and humic acids leached from leaf litter and bark. It is fresh water, not salt, and it arrives from rainfall rather than from the sea — when Florence stalled over the region in September 2018 it was rain, not surge, that put water through houses here and cut the roads into Wilmington for days. Tannin is a dye. It is the same chemistry used to colour wood and, historically, to fix dyes into cloth, and given warm wool and a few hours it does exactly what it was always going to do, which is set. That is why a rug that took an inch of creek water comes back a uniform dull brown that ordinary washing will not shift, and why it needs a different treatment: a wash aimed at the tannin itself, followed by a pH correction, because leaving wool sitting acidic is its own slow damage.
