What Forest Hills is built from
A 1920s streetcar-era suburb of curving streets and deep shaded lots around Forest Hills Drive, listed as a historic district in its own right. Brick and frame houses over crawlspaces, oak floors through the main rooms, and a short drive from the studio lot on North Twenty-Third Street that has been in production since the mid-1980s.
Long-settled families alongside a rolling supply of furnished lets. Film and television work in this city runs in bursts, and when a production is up a great many of these houses are rented furnished for a few months at a time to people who arrive with a suitcase and leave the same way.
The Forest Hills problem
The damage here happens while the rug is not on the floor. A furnished let turns over between productions, the house is reset for whoever is next, and the rugs get rolled and put somewhere — a garage, a storage unit out on Market Street, the back of a closet under the stairs. Rolling a wool rug is not a neutral act in this climate. A rolled rug has no air moving through it, so whatever moisture is in the foundation on the day it goes up stays exactly where it is, and in an uncooled Wilmington garage in July a good deal more joins it. Two months later you unroll mildew that has grown in a spiral, a set of crush lines where the roll pressed pile against pile, and often enough carpet beetle larvae that found a dark undisturbed wool tube and never had to travel. None of that is visible on the day the rug is put away, which is exactly why nobody cleans it first — and cleaning it first is the whole fix.
